About Cameron Evans

My name is Cameron Evans and I am a native of Tangier Island, Virginia. Living on Tangier I grew up working the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. By doing so, I was fortunate to experience a much different way of living, the type of living that has made me the person I am today. I started working in my dad’s crab-house watching over his crabs when I was 10 years old, first learning about the business that has shaped my community. After a few years of working in the crab houses I was a mate aboard crabbing boats crabbing in the Chesapeake Bay. Spending my childhood on the water made me realize how lucky I was to grow up in a place that had so many environmental opportunities.

After seeing the changes to the island with the ever occurring coastal erosion, I wanted to capture life here so generations after could appreciate what Tangier truly is. Through my images of working watermen, wildlife, boats, and sunsets, I have portrayed how rewarding living on the island is and can be! As a licensed captain and commercial waterman I continue to live on the island life but have embraced it a way that I can help others love the area as much as I do! I graduated high school in 2018 with a class of 6 people with an outlook of going to college. I attended Virginia Wesleyan University in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in 2018. During my time at Wesleyan I became the main photographer for their Marketing and Communications department as well as the Sports department. Four years later I graduated college at Virginia Wesleyan University, majoring in Business, with minors in Political Science and Art. Upon finishing college I returned back home to Tangier to continue running my businesses.
