2024 Tangier Island Photography Workshops
If you have never been to Tangier Island, Virginia, visiting it for the first time is a very unique experience. It was discovered in 1608, a year after Jamestown, and was settled in the late 1600’s. The island is a mile and a half long and about 7 miles south of the Maryland/Virginia line. For centuries the community of Tangier has thrived from the water business catching Blue crabs, soft-shell crabs, various fish, and oysters. Tangier’s classic use of deadrise boats and crab shanties are attractive to a photographer’s eye. On this trip you will get to visit the main island of Tangier, meeting the native islanders, and getting to experience the life they live away from the mainland of Virginia. The island is enriched with an abundance of wildlife, consisting of Ospreys, Brown Pelicans, herons, cormorants, oyster catchers, black skimmers, and much more. The 2023 Tangier Island Photography Workshop offers a chance for you to be able experience the life of an islanders on a much more personal level. Throughout the trip you will gain the knowledge of a local, visit Tangier and Smith Islands, go crabbing out on the Chesapeake Bay, visit nesting sites, go searching for Indian arrowheads, gain photography skills, and grow accustomed to local meals. After the trip you will have gained a better understanding to the seafood business, nature, and the lives of the local people. This trip allows everyone to step outside of their photography focuses and gives them a full new array of subject matter.
Meet The Watermen
During your trip you will be able to meet the watermen that call the islands home. Growing up working the water, most have continued doing so their whole lives. The passion they have for the seafood industry is what keeps crabs, oysters, and fish on the market. Some of the hardest working people you will meet and having one the most time consuming jobs around, these watermen wouldn't change their jobs for anything.
You will be able to see and photograph the abundance of aquatic life pulled to the surface from below, including: blue crabs, soft-shell crabs, rockfish, drum, trout, turtles, rays, seahorses, pufferfish, flounder, spider crabs, and countless other types of marine life that call the aquatic grasses home in our area.
Experience the Wildlife
Immerse yourself within the wildlife that calls our area home. During the workshops, you will be able to see the countless species of birds wading through the marshes, floating in the bay, and soaring through the sky. Though some species call Tangier & Smith Islands home year-round, the summer months bring a migration of wildlife that nest along our shores. Experiencing the new life being brought into the world makes one appreciate being amongst nature even more.
Experience the Wildlife
